One of the best things about freelancing is that there’s no wrong way to do it. There’s no wrong way to review your business or plan for the future, either.
Some freelancers conduct business reviews quarterly. Others do them annually. Some of us do them when (or if) we remember to.

With Editors BC’s new season getting underway this month, West Coast Editor felt now would be a good time to help members learn a bit more about their new executive for 2021–2022.
We’ve asked each member of the executive to describe their role in keeping Editors BC flourishing. We also asked them to pick two more questions on a variety of topics.

As we look forward to the 2021–2022 season, we would like to introduce you to your Editors BC executive members for this year.
First, though, we’d like to thank outgoing executive members Barbara Johnston (professional development), Katie Beaton (publications and West Coast Editor managing editor), and Joyce Chung (programs).
We extend a warm welcome to new executive members Claire Majors (professional development), Madeline Walker (programs), Rita Zamluk (programs), Janis Cleugh (co-secretary), and Naomi Cappallo (volunteer coodinator). These new executive members started their term on July 1.
In addition, Marta Orellana has moved from programs to publications and West Coast Editor managing editor.

On Sunday, June 13, 2021, at the Editors Canada conference, Letitia Henville will host a networking session on “Developing content marketing opportunities.”
Content marketing is a long-term marketing strategy that involves giving away your knowledge for free to potential clients, and thereby establishing their trust. This session will bring together editors with shared expertise to collaborate on content marketing opportunities. It will be grounded in the ethos that editors are not in competition with one another, and that raising the profile of the profession and of Editors Canada creates more business for all of us. Participants are invited to see their fellow editors as supportive colleagues and potential collaborators—not as competition.
Letitia is a freelance academic editor at shortishard.ca and the advice columnist behind “Ask Dr. Editor,” published monthly at University Affairs. Letitia edits grant applications for artists and academics, and also edits journal articles, book chapters, monographs, and promotion and tenure dossiers, with a special emphasis on the health sciences, social sciences, and humanities.

In June, Editors BC elected its new executive for 2020-2021. We felt now would be a good chance for members to get to know these 11 volunteers a little better.

During our online chapter meeting on June 17, Editors BC held elections to fill positions becoming vacant on the executive.
Before we list the new executive, we’d like to thank outgoing executive members Alexandra Bogdanovic (programs), Maggie Clark (publications and West Coast Editor managing editor), Marianne Grier (past chair), Ellen Michelle (professional development), and Tiffany Sloan (treasurer) for their dedication to serving all Editors BC members.
We are also extending a warm welcome to new executive members Katie Beaton (publications and West Coast Editor managing editor), Tania Cheffins (treasurer), Joyce Chung (programs), Letitia Henville (professional development), and Marta Orellana (programs). These new executive members will take over from their outgoing counterparts on July 1.

Join us at our next monthly meeting for a panel discussion led by Editors BC member Lynn Slobogian on how peer groups can help you.
Our January meeting has been cancelled due to bad weather and travel warnings from the BC Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure and from Translink. We hope to re-schedule the meeting for February. In the meantime, please stay safe and warm!
