Summer is coming! Join us in winding down the Editors BC 2016–17 season with a wine and cheese social. We’ll also be electing members of next year’s executive (see below for more information) and having a book swap! Bring along any books you’re finished with and exchange them for others at the book exchange table. Summer reading, here we come!

Executive positions that will be elected at the May 17 meeting:

Programs co-chair
The programs co-chairs arrange and host programs for eight general meetings each year, from September to November, and from January to May. They also host the branch holiday party in December and supervise the social committee volunteers who set out refreshments at our monthly meetings. There are usually two programs chairs.

Incumbent Lana Okerlund has offered to continue as programs chair for 2017–18, and we are looking for a co-chair to join her. Contact Marianne Grier at bcchair@editors.ca or Roma Ilnyckyj at bcpastchair@editors.ca for more information.

Secretary
The secretary keeps the records of the association in good order, conducts email voting, and acts as archivist by maintaining and storing all non-financial official records.

Incumbent Eric Damer is stepping down at the end of this season. Please contact Marianne Grier at bcchair@editors.ca if you would like to learn more about this position.

Volunteer coordinator (new position)
The volunteer coordinator oversees the branch’s volunteer program, from promotion to management to retention. Duties include developing and nurturing relationships with volunteers, managing the volunteer database and volunteer recognition programs, and participating regularly in monthly meetings and executive meetings.

We are looking for someone to take on this important new position. Please contact Marianne Grier at bcchair@editors.ca if you would like to learn more about this role.

Professional development co-chair
The two professional development (PD) co-chairs plan and coordinate seminars and other PD initiatives. In recent years, this has meant running three seminars in the fall and four seminars in the spring.

Erin Parker has offered to continue as PD co-chair for 2017–18, and current publications chair Amy Haagsma has put her name forward to join Erin as PD co-chair. However, as the co-chairs must be elected, there’s still an opportunity for other candidates to express interest. Please contact Erin Parker at bcseminars@editors.ca for more information.

Publications chair
The publications chair manages the Editors BC blog, West Coast Editor (WCE) (editorsbc.blog). The publications chair is responsible for the day-to-day management and direction of WCE. Duties include securing content from various sources, including the Editors BC executive and members, and regularly participating in executive meetings.

Maggie Clark has put her name forward to join the executive as publications chair for 2017–18. However, as the chair must be elected, there’s still an opportunity for other candidates to express interest. Please contact Amy Haagsma at bcpublications@editors.ca to learn more about this position.

Non-executive positions to be filled:
The following volunteer opportunities are not executive positions and not subject to election. If you’re interested in getting involved—but not ready to commit to an executive position—volunteering on one of these committees is a great way to gain experience.

Executive positions that are already filled:

Chair
The branch chair oversees the branch’s business and activities, and acts as the branch spokesperson. Duties include preparing agendas, chairing monthly executive meetings, and executing other administrative functions.

Incumbent Marianne Grier has offered to serve as chair for the 2017–18 season. She will take a leave of absence for the first part of the season, and duties will be covered by past chair Roma Ilnyckyj.

Past chair
The past chair is a non-elected position with membership on the branch executive. The past chair stands in for the branch chair when necessary. This person is also responsible for finding nominees for the following year’s executive and for running the last meeting of the year, at which the new executive is elected.

Current past chair Roma Ilnyckyj will fill the role of past chair.

Treasurer
The treasurer is responsible for the branch funds, including preparing the annual budget and providing the executive with financial updates.

Incumbent Tiffany Sloan has offered to continue as our branch treasurer for the coming year.

Member services
The member services chair encourages membership in the association and strives to improve the experience of all members. This chair also provides support for the monthly meetings and oversees the work of the hotline coordinator.

Incumbent Heather Ross has agreed to serve as member services chair for 2017–18.

Communications and social media chair
The communications and social media (CSM) chair promotes the association and the branch to the public by coordinating Editors BC’s social media presence and by ensuring a presence at public events organized by Editors BC and other groups.

Incumbent CSM chair Wendy Barron has offered to continue in her position for 2017–18.

Non-executive positions that are already filled:

  • Eva van Emden will continue as our hotline coordinator.
  • Anne Brennan will continue as our webmaster.

No editors’ pub night
Because this meeting is a wine and cheese, there will be no organized pub gathering beforehand.
