What: EAC annual conference

EAC’s annual conference features industry speakers, professional development sessions, networking opportunities, an awards banquet, and more. This year’s conference will be held June 12–14, 2015, at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. Greg Ioannou is the conference chair.
The conference theme is “Editing Goes Global,” and this will be EAC’s first international conference. The speaker roster includes industry professionals from Canada, the US, the UK, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand. The Professional Writers Association of Canada (PWAC) is co-hosting, and several other associations have joined as national and international partners:
- American Copy Editors Society (ACES)
- Association of Freelance Editors, Proofreaders and Indexers (AFEPI)
- Board of Editors in the Life Sciences (BELS)
- Editorial Freelancers Association (EFA)
- Indexing Society of Canada (ISC)
- Northwest Independent Editors Guild (NIEG)
- Plain Language Association InterNational (PLAIN)
- Association of Registered Graphic Designers (RGD)
- Society for Editors and Proofreaders (SfEP)
- Society of American Business Editors and Writers (SABEW)
- Writers and Editors Network (WEN)
Conference program
The conference will include three full days of sessions, with pricing options for one, two, or all three days. Early-bird rates are in effect through February 28, 2015.
Friday will begin with sessions in three different streams:
- Networking
- Editing
- Language
An opening reception will be held Friday evening to welcome everyone to the conference. Saturday kicks off with an opening keynote by Carol Fisher Saller, editor of the Chicago Manual of Style’s online Q&A and author of The Subversive Copy Editor.
Five core streams are planned for Saturday and Sunday:
- Editing Around the World
- Business Practices
- Editing Practices
- Editing Tools
- Self-Publishing
EAC-BC members will be participating in a number of the conference sessions:
- Editor as Advocate: Plain Language and Social Justice (Iva Cheung)
- Foolproof Techniques for Setting Rates and Preparing Accurate Estimates (Arlene Prunkl)
- “Good Enough” Editing with Open Educational Resources (Yvonne Van Ruskenveld and Ruth Wilson)
- Hiring Other Freelancers: Expanding Your Business with Colleagues (Arlene Prunkl with Janet MacMillan, Laura Poole, and Carol Fisher Saller)
- How to Work with Self-Publishing Authors: The Agony and the Ecstasy (Arlene Prunkl)
Saturday’s sessions will be followed by EAC’s annual general meeting and awards banquet, featuring presentations of the Tom Fairley Award for Editorial Excellence, the Claudette Upton Scholarship, the President’s Awards for Volunteer Service, and the Lee d’Anjou Volunteer of the Year Award. The conference will conclude on Sunday with a closing keynote by Katherine Barber, former editor-in-chief of the Canadian Oxford Dictionary.

Get involved
Volunteering with the conference committee is a great way to get involved and to meet new people. In particular, the volunteer coordinators are looking for a vendor fair coordinator, a photographer, and session hosts (current at time of posting).

Don’t forget to book your travel and accommodations as soon as possible! EAC has arranged for flight discounts through WestJet and Porter Airlines. Hotel discounts have been arranged through the InterContinental Toronto Centre Hotel and the Strathcona Hotel. Billeting is also an option for those who would like to stay with a colleague.
