EVENT LISTINGS: August 2013

Do you have an event planned (or know of one) that you’d like to appear in these listings? Send us the details.

August 17, 2013: Editing Workshop … For Writers Too

This workshop will also be held May 11, 2013, in Victoria; June 8, 2013, on Salt Spring Island; and July 13, 2013, in Nanaimo.

This summer, editor Cheryl Cohen will be offering four sessions of her hands-on editing workshop, which she describes as an “intensive, fun encounter.” Topics will include: substantive editing; copy editing; proofreading; the editor–writer relationship; and tips on how to become a professional editor. Each participant will receive an 18-page handout.

About the instructor: Cheryl Cohen is an experienced freelance editor who has worked on many high-profile books, including Miriam Toews’ widely read novel A Complicated Kindness, which won the 2004 Governor General’s Award for English Fiction. Cheryl spoke about the state of the publishing industry—and how writers should adapt—at the Professional Editors Association of Vancouver Island (PEAVI) May 13, 2013, meeting.

Hi. I’m a very new subscriber to your site – I think it is fantastic! ++

You may have had comments already on the following:
On the site’s latest post I noticed “spoke” s/b will be speaking or will speak?
Cheryl spoke (del) (add: will speak) about the state of the publishing industry—and how writers should adapt—at the Professional Editors Association of Vancouver Island (PEAVI) May 13, 2013, meeting. (Sounds very interesting!)

Unfortunately I didn’t have my camera with me in Richmond yesterday – (will have it glued to me from now on – drive by editing – great idea) I did a double take when I saw this label on a car window: Baby on Road …………!

I look forward to spending many hours on your site.

    • Thanks for the feedback on our site, Patti! We’re hugely appreciative. We’re also, quite frankly, thrilled that you’ve been enjoying our Drive-by Editing column, and we look forward to receiving your “Baby on Road” submission! Learn more about Drive-by Editing submissions.

Oh—and great question, by the way, about our choice of the simple past in the “Editing Workshop … For Writers Too” August 17, 2013, event listing: “Cheryl spoke [simple past] about the state of the publishing industry—and how writers should adapt—at the … May 13, 2013, meeting.”

Why didn’t we use the simple future: “Cheryl will speak [simple future] about the state of the publishing industry—and how writers should adapt—at the … May 13, 2013, meeting”? Poor judgment. We felt that readers would not be looking at June, July, or August event listings until after Cheryl’s talk; the talk is scheduled to take place mere days from now. Little did we suspect that our event listings were so popular!

Nostra culpa. Point to you. We’ll make the changes now—in the June 8, 2013; July 13, 2013; and August 17, 2013, listings for this workshop.

      Thanks again,
      West Coast Editor

      • Done (again)! Now that Cheryl Cohen’s May 13, 2013, talk has taken place, we’ve changed the tense of that pesky sentence (in all four listings) back to the simple past.

Sitting here, giving ourselves a collective high-five for doing our job.

  2. My ears have been burning out here on Salt Spring! All very enjoyable though, I agree. Taking part in a PEAVI meeting made me think that I really should attend an EAC meeting one day … is 16 years after joining too late?
